My Intel iMac is dead, logic board failure, how's yours?

With much dismay, I resigned myself to the fact my 2006 17" Intel iMac is kaput. I've had it since July 2006, so in just 2 years and 3 months it's died. It's the first total failure of any PC I've ever owned and also turns out to be the most expensive. To replace a logic board here in Canada costs around $1000, so it's an economic write off, I might as well buy a new machine.

When I bought the machine in the UK, back in 2006 I didn't bother getting AppleCare as I thought it was just another extended warranty you don't need. Somewhat ironically I think there's a European consumer law (which I'll have to research), that covers you outside the 1 year manufacturers warranty, but now I'm in Canada, I doubt that applies.

Two things disappoint me here:

1) It's shattered my perception of Apple producing reliable machines. I've been using Macs for years with no trouble with the machines at all. The expensive price tag stood for style and reliability - something that was made to last.

2) The sheer expense to myself. What ever I do, it's going to cost me. I cannot afford another Mac for a few months now and I'm back to using my old Sony Vaio, which the Mac replaced and is still going (it just about runs Flex 3). I need a machine to do my work, but can I really justify buying another iMac at $1500+ ? In Canada, Apple doesn't offer any credit schemes and I'm only allowed a $500 credit card limit as I've not lived in the country for long. It pains me to be actually considering buying a PC with Vista on it!

Doing a bit of Goolging and speaking to the guy in the Apple Store, it seems early Intel iMacs are prone to this problem. Potentially thousands of machines could be dropping like flies, out of warranty and at great expense to the consumer. Apple are probably keeping this one quiet, so please post here if you've had a logic board failure (or any other catastrophic problem) with the 2006/2007 Intel iMac models (the white ones).

**** UPDATE - MARCH 2011 ****
Thank you everyone for posting. There is a petition you can sign to recall 2006 iMacs.
http://www.petitionspot.com/petitions/imacrecall

Alas I ripped my iMac apart to get the HDD out and sent it for recycling. But if you still have your dead iMac, it may be worth signing the petition and get on a Class Action Lawsuit.

iMac 20' late 2006, dead logic board. There is no sense to pick up new one, costs a lot. I think about hackintosh as new computer, because original Macs are not reliable. Common Apple, old PCs with Windows runs like charm!

Add me to the list. My early 2007 24" iMac started experiencing problems last week (lines, artifacts, freezes, kernel panic). I did the SMC fan control "fix," which is working for now, but general consensus seems to be this is akin to life support. This is the first problem of this nature I've had since the Mac LC we had when I was a kid. 3-4 years of service isn't acceptable for a $2k+ machine. Some specs: Early 2007 white iMac, 2.16 core duo, Nvidia 7600 GT graphics card.

Same thing happen to my iMac 2.15 20" core 2 duo - white.
Can someone write an open letter to Steve Job and provide him with the following links:

and see how would he response.

Just another though, we may be able to stir up the publicity by gathering near the Apple local store and exhibit the fail imac to the potential apple customer. Any one from Perth Western Australia? :-)

Yes, my iMac 20" (late 2006) is dead as well. It stared about a year ago when it suddenly stopped working. In the beginning it helped to unplug everythig, wait for a while and it would work again. However, this doesn't work either anymore. I had cleaned it inside, refitted a new HDD (energy saver) and more. Worked great for a few weeks ... run cooler than before. Now it's dead. Logic board. I called Apple - they want to charge for a servie call if they would answer any questions. I am quiet ... at Apple. Customer since years with 4 machines (Mac Mini, MacBooks, iMacs). Except for the MacMinis, all (yes ALL) had problems and sometimes it's very difficult to convince them that there is a problem. With my Macbook (wifi wasn't working) they said .. oh, this is new to us. I told them to look at their own forums and stop bs-ing. They finally replaced it. I don't know why they do this ...

Have a 2006 17" intel Imac. Purchased April 06. Logic Board packed up Dec 07. Under Applecare so was replaced no charge. 09' Screen started getting vertical coloured lines! More kept appearing over 12 mths . Read posts. Approached Apple. Got replaced Free of Charge.April2010. Now Imac won't start up! Is going to Apple Logo, spinning wheel and progress bar then closing down. have tried all suggested work arounds. Nothing works! Fingers crossed I'll call Apple customer service tomorrow. This post/ blog will definitely be of assistance.

3 year old imac 24 got toasted..overheating? due to bad design I would say. Send to Apple centre (400 km away) 100 euro to just check.
900 euro to repair. WTF? (ok, 100 euro falls away)
logic board failure + HD broken.
not very specific hey?

don't know what to do...sell off parts on ebay?
f++k it. p+ssed as h+ll.

i have a 20 inch intel circa 2008 and same problem as everyone else, the cost of repair is crazy and is a money making racket by apple. some people seemed to be fooled into thinking apple are a great brand of the highest quality but there no more than a heartless corporation no different than the rest making cheap crap in china and marketing it as something its not.

someone posted videos of their 2006 imac that freezes and distorts graphics:

my imac has the exact same problem.

My 24" iMac 2.33 with upgraded everything possible failed just over the 3 year Applecare less plan.
It wasn't until 3 or 4 month further on I read people HAVE succesfully had replacements outside of the 3year ACP if just outside.
On refelection problems had appeared whilst covered by the plan which makes it even worse, i put it down to playing games using bootcamp and xp and incorrect settings based on not knowing Windows that well.
grr

Anyway a 1000 'signatures' are required for this Class Action Lawsuit.

I have iMac early 2008 model and just after 2 and a half years it's logic board died. It's quality build is questionable and it's definitely one of the most expensive computers i have bought and it's one with the shortest life time. Back to cheap old school PC.

I called Apple in 2009 concerning my 24" iMac that was no loner working. I'm currently living in Germany and had to take it to a service center about 45 minutes away even though I purchased it in the U.S. After spending approximately $100 they were able to tell me I had a bad logic board. I then called Apple and they acted as if they had rarely heard of this problem. I said, "Really, have you ever taken a look at all the threads that relate to this issue on your own website?" What a scam! If Toyota has to recall their vehicles on just a few faulty vehicles then Apple sure as hell needs to recall these machines based on thousands of complete failures! Make it right Apple!!!!

How upsetting it is. I have too had my intel iMac since June 2006. I thought what I was getting was going to be a beautiful new fast machine. Keep in mind my Bondi blue iMac and eMac are still running smoothly, I've never seen or experienced what I have with my 20'' intel iMac.

I've lost count with things that have happened, freezing screen fading to all black, then on another occasion to white, another horizontal lines black n white, single lines through screen, also something interesting when a DVD is loaded and selecting a file to preview in the finder window it magically disappeared from the file list. Now that is something serious... Even I know that a DVD is read only memory! Over the past 4 years I've mentioned all these things to the AppleCare technician over phone. I've also had the harddrive and DVD replaced within the first year of getting it.

Now I've just been experiencing a very slow freezing sick mac. Hey, whenever I used to see the sad mac icon on my other macs I'd feel like it was the end of the world. Well nothing has been as bad as this experience.

It's also upsetting that while being a very loyal Apple customer I've been promoting Apple to everyone I meet, even while I'm working on a computer that's been making me angry!

Recently I spoke to AppleCare and they told me that a recall was on for the intel iMac 17'' computer. I said to the lady well mine is a 20'' , what's the difference! I also began to tell her the problems I'd been experiencing and that I have images of everything. I told her thAt I had these black n white jaggared horizontal lines. She said that I should be seeing vertical lines. Well that upset me to think whatever direction, if something is wrong with it it's bad. Anyway, a few days later little did I know I was going to experience vertical lines. Do now I have all the images ready to send to apple plus I need to take it into a apple service technician. I will be asking for a new iMac. I can't afford for this to keep happening if it's a known fault with this particular intel Mac them they can cover it!

Stay tuned for images.

same issues as all of you, lame. My 1st and my last Mac unless they correct the problem. 20" intel. X1600 W870. SMCFanControl has kept me going for the last year and a half.

Bought iMAC 20" on May 25, 2009 Serial #W89101A96x0. I am having the same problem. Went to bed with computer in sleep mode and in the morning unable to boot the system anymore. Took it to the Apple Genious Bar and like everyone else seems to say they told me it most likely was the Logic Board that needed to be replaced. This appears to be quite a number of years with dysfunctional iMac's costing consumers alot of money.

My early 2009 24" Imac stopped a week ago, and alas a bad logic board is suspected. Fortunately we have strong consumer laws here in NZ so am willing to take Apple to small claims court. Seems the issue continues past the 2006 models. I'll bring this blog and others + petition to court.

So... there is no resolution for this?

I am thinking about taking my iMac into TekServe. It's been getting by with 1 line using SMCFanControl for the last year ,but another line just popped up. So... Guess I'll try to get it looked at before it's totally dead.

I signed the petition. Good job on that. Looks like Apple is telling us to go f-ck ourselves, though.

Anyone ever going to buy an iMac again? I was skeptical, now I know it was a bad choice. Never again.

Anyone get a different diagnosis than "new logic board for $900?" That's just ridiculously bad customer service.

my early 2008 imac 24 died. less than 4 years old. logic board failure..... $800 for the part alone. absolutely crazy. there are numerous blogs and threads out there with the same problem. APPLE- you gonna fix this blatant hardware catastrophy?? they say just buy a new one.... sounds like the "green" thing to do. make a crappy product and toss it out with the trash in 3 years. how is this "green"? what a joke

Thanks for share this post I also share with you something hope you like my post. There are various scratch removal products available online and in hardware stores. Usually this is some sort of cream or liquid that you can apply to the scratch until it fades or completely disappears. The cost of these products can range from a few pounds to twenty, and you may have to try a few to get good results. Make sure to look on online forums for reviews of good products that have worked for other people, but be aware that this will only work on small scratches, so if the damage is extensive it won't work as well and you'll probably have to replace the entire screen. Thanks

I bought a used 2006 iMac through eBay that lasted about one year. I'm not sure if the PSU or logic board was what failed.

My late 2012 iMac had a PSU and logic board failure within 7 months of purchase. It was a covered by warranty, but doesn't give me a lot of faith in the quality of iMacs.

Hey I my friends I tell you something can you give me answer please Many wax products market their ability to take out any damage that can be done, whether it is by gravity or pets or clumsiness. A coat of Turtle Wax, for instance, will eliminate the scratch but can leave behind a film of wax that makes it difficult to use the screen. If you use wax, you have to clean meticulously around the scratch so that the wax residue does not complicate use. You can use a plastic polish to speed up the cleaning if you decide to use wax.
